"I am pleased to report that the First Annual Alliance-wide JSA Conference hosted by Neuwirth Leadership Academy was an outstanding success! ...Our JSA students put on a remarkable event at City Hall this past Sunday. We had over 200 students from 28 schools across Southern California attend. Mr. and Mrs. Neuwirth attended most of the day. Frank Baxter gave a closing speech, after he ran the LA Marathon! Rachel Kaganoff Stern was instrumental in the planning process, and gave up her full Sunday to attend. Curren D. Price Jr., 9th District Councilman participated in our opening discussion. Curren Price's field deputies spent the entire day at City Hall assisting our students with whatever they needed. Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, 54th District State Assemblyman also attended! ...Alliance Home Office assisted us by hiring a photographer and paying for buses, thank you Catherine Suitor!!! We also had support for this endeavor from Ena Lavan, Area Superintendent and Howard Lappin, Chief of Schools.
If you have never attended a JSA event, I strongly suggest that you do! It is amazing to see our kids in such a different light. The research, energy and enthusiasm that they exhibited was a remarkable feat for high school students. What I saw these kids do, presenting cohesive, research-based arguments/opinions are things that many adults cannot even do! (Just look at the US Senate!) Seeing our students and the students from the 27 other schools reaffirmed and renewed my faith in our future generations! These kids will go on to do amazing things and be amazing civic-minded 21st century citizens!!"
